Brophy scores six goals as Carroll beats Wood, 11-6 Inquirer Suburban Staff You could say that Archbishop Carroll senior Jess Brophy has Archbishop Wood's number when it comes to girls' lacrosse. Brophy who scored five goals in a win over the Vikings during the regular season, tallied six last night as Carroll beat the Vikings, 11-6, at St. Joseph's University for its fifth straight Catholic League championship. The win also extended the Patriots' league winning streak to 66 games. Carroll, No. 6 in The Inquirer's Southeastern Pennsylvania rankings, has not lost since bowing to St. Hubert in the 2000 championship game. "Brophy was just all over the place," said Wood coach Chris Aqualino, whose team finished the season at 15-7 overall and won the Northern Division crown with a 10-2 record. Brophy had her first goal as the Southern Division champion Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. She said that Wood didn't play her any differently than it did in their first meeting, an 18-8 Carroll triumph. "I thought they played good defense all over, but our offense opened up some spaces for me; I would see one pop open and I'd go," said Brophy. The James Madison-bound Brophy closed out the first half with two more goals as Carroll took a 6-1 halftime lead. Junior Amanda Makoid got the Vikings' first goal with about 13 minutes gone in the first half. Makoid ended up tops for Wood with three goals. Wood made two quick runs at the Patriots in the second half, cutting the deficit to 6-3 and 8-4 at the 18-minute, 33-second mark, but Brophy hit another goal with 13:28 left to make it 9-4. Meg Brennan closed out the Patriots scoring with a pair of goals. Brophy said the Wood runs reminded her of the semifinals when St. Hubert also made a run before losing, 11-8, Tuesday night. "We just needed to keep our composure and take control of the draws. Doing that [draw controls] was tough today," said Brophy, a member of the all-Catholic League South Division team and the division's MVP. She and Carroll coach Lorraine Beers agreed that the long winning streak has not been a big subject of discussion among the players. "Some of the younger players may not really be aware of it," Beers said with a laugh. But some young players, like freshmen Gabby Capuzzi and Kelsey Sturm, have had to step up because of injuries and illnesses suffered this season by the Patriots (21-3 overall, 12-0 in winning the South Division title). Sophomore Cara Filippelli was the lastest victim, suffering a leg injury in the semifinal game with St. Hubert. "The freshmen have really done a job for us," Brophy said. Another key for the Patriots was defense, which shut out high-scoring Kasey Ozolkowski. Archbishop Wood 1 5 - 6 Archbishop Carroll 6 5 - 11 Goals: AW-Amanda Makoid 3, Jill Carroll 2, Sam Ritaldo.
