Carroll girls' lacrosse players taking nothing for granted Inquirer Suburban Staff The Archbishop Carroll girls' lacrosse team may be an overwhelming favorite to win its sixth straight Catholic League title, but coach Lorraine Beers is doing her best to keep her players from being overconfident. "You can never take any opponent for granted," Beers said. "We have to stay focused and play hard every time out." The Patriots, 17-1-1 overall, were 13-0 in regular-season league play. In a 1 p.m. semifinal Saturday at St. Joseph's University, the Southern Division champions will meet the winner of today's playoff between Conwell-Egan and St. Hubert. "This group knows their strengths and weaknesses, and they really work well together," Beers said. Cara Filippelli, a junior midfielder, has been Carroll's scoring machine. "She's really fast, scoops up a lot of ground balls, and does a great job defensively," Beers said. The Catholic League girls' lacrosse championship is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 23 at St. Joseph's University. Volleyball Christopher Dock, seeded fourth in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA tournament, will host a quarterfinal tomorrow night against the winner of last night's first-round game between 12th-seeded Bensalem and fifth-seeded Central Bucks South. "We definitely have a disciplined, hardworking group," Dock coach Kirby King said. "Our senior leadership is outstanding." Standout seniors include the cocaptains - outside hitter Evan Halteman, who has more than 1,000 kills in his career, and setter Luke Yoder - plus defensive specialist Scott Wilkinson and leading blocker Greg Seurn. The top three seeds in the tournament are Souderton, Neshaminy and Pennsbury. The teams that reach the May 25 final will qualify for the state tournament. Girls' soccer Top-seeded Central, trying for its third straight District 12 title, will meet eighth-seeded Frankford in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. today at Northeast. Central relies heavily on goalkeeper Mallori Malachi, a four-year starter who has won a soccer scholarship to South Florida. She also played basketball and volleyball. "Mallori is a tremendous player," Central coach Paul Metzgar said. "She's extremely athletic, and she's got great leaping ability." The Lancers' other headliners are senior center halfback Jackie Barrett and junior midfielder Steffani Gravely. Sophomore Jessica Phillips and senior Amie Dean are offensive threats. Girls' lacrosse West Chester East has clinched its fifth Ches-Mont League championship in the last six years. "It's a great bunch of kids and it's a team-oriented group," coach Dale Watkins said. "I think that's why we've been so successful." The Vikings, 16-2 entering yesterday's match against West Chester Henderson, a league rival, were ranked first in the state in the latest LaxPower.com poll. Their only losses were to Conestogaand Radnor. Rowing Haverford School, one of many local schools set to compete in the 80th annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill, which begins Friday, is down to 26 rowers. "This is probably the smallest group we've had in recent years," coach Jim Barker said. Haverford is led by senior cocaptains Tom Caruso and Chris Livingston, who will continue their rowing careers at Georgetown and Cornell, respectively. Fencing Haverford School sophomore Marcus Howard recently won the men's foil event at the Mid-Atlantic Section Championships, a competition for fencers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Washington. Howard won the title when he defeated teammate Nick Stockdale in an overtime match at Swarthmore College. Contact suburban staff writer Rick O'Brien at 610-313-8019 or robrien@phillynews.com. | |||
