PHILADELPHIA -- Last year, Cara Filippelli was injured during Archbishop Carrolls Catholic League girls lacrosse semifinal victory over St. Hubert at Saint Josephs University.
Filippelli, Jackie DePetris, who had been hurt earlier in the season, and Mary Beth Brophy, who was recovering from knee surgery, watched the Patriots title game victory over Archbishop Wood from the sidelines.
Saturday afternoon, Filippelli scored four goals, Brophy got three goals and one assist and DePetris also came up with three goals as Carroll rolled past St. Hubert, 19-2, and qualified for another meeting with Wood in the final.
The 2006 title will be decided at Saint Josephs at 6:30 Tuesday night.
In the second minute of Saturdays game, Filippelli took a bad spill and came up holding her leg.
"Jackie just screamed," said Filippelli. "I landed just about the same place I landed in last years game. But I was all right. I dont think I could have watched (the title game) this year."
What all of the Carroll players, coaches and fans watched after Saturdays win was a brief ceremony honoring the teams four seniors: DePetris, Megan Brennan (two goals, one assist against St. Hubert), Kelly Bosco (one goal, one assist) and Vanessa Coll.
"Vanessa has been such a good defender for us," Filippelli said. "Bosco is always the one who picks us up when we need it. All of our seniors will be great. I hope I have the chance to play against them -- or maybe even with them -- in college."
Carroll coach Lorraine Beers smiles at the way her program has turned into a family affair. Jen (Monmouth) and Jill (Syracuse) DePetris, Ashley (Duke) and Lauren (William & Mary) Coll and Jess Brophy (James Madison), Bridget Brennan as well as Kate Filippelli (Loyola) helped other Carroll teams win championships.
Colls sister Ashley was helping Duke defeat James Madison and Brophys sister Jess in an NCAA Division I quarterfinal game while Carroll was playing St. Hubert.
"My dad was down there with my sister (Lauren) and my mom and my other sister (Tiffany) came here," said Coll, who will attend Penn State University. "Its great that we have the chance to play for the championship again.
"Our defense has really been ready to play this year. Everybody knows our offense will score goals. Our defense has been coming up big, too."
Mary Beth Brophy, who scores goals and also helps out defensively, said that Colls contributions to the success of this Carroll team have been significant.
"I think its great for her," Brophy said. "The other seniors are all such close friends and hang out together. Vanessa has another group of friends, but shes grown closer to the others on this team and Ive been happy the way things worked out for her."
Carroll has not lost to a Catholic League opponent since the final game of the 2000 playoffs, when the Pats dropped a one-goal decision to St. Hubert.
"All of us feel honored to have the chance to play for another championship," DePetris said. "This season has gone by so fast, but we still have another game left.
"It is hard to believe that its our last game together."
