SPRINGFIELD -- Nobody won. Nobody lost.
For a while after the second half ended, nobody was sure if the game was over.
Springfield Highs Julianna Jeffers scored a goal two seconds before the horn sounded at the end of the second half Friday afternoon, giving the Cougars an 11-11 tie with Archbishop Carroll in an entertaining nonleague game between the countys top-ranked girls lacrosse teams.
A brief discussion between the coaches and officials took place after the second half ended before the game was declared over.
"Its a nonleague game and they said they didnt have to play overtime," said Carroll coach Lorraine Beers. "They have another game (this morning). "Maybe it would have been nice to play overtime, but maybe I wouldnt have said that if they had won."
Springfield coach Keith Broome, whose team trailed by four goals in the first half, was relieved with the way the game ended.
"It was an awesome game," Broome said. "Were happy the way things ended up. It was a nice ending to a game played on a nice day."
Carroll (18-1-1) had a 5-1 lead in the first 10 minutes, with junior Mary Beth Brophy getting two of her five goals. Junior Ashley Bowers scored two of her three goals to help the Cougars(12-4-1) cut their deficit to two by halftime.
Bowers and Jeffers pulled Springfield even before the second half was four minutes old, but Carrolls Jackie DePetris set up scores by Laura Beck and Brophy.
Jeffers and Cara Filippelli traded goals, leaving Carroll two goals up with 9:08 to play. Jeffers and Jackie Eastman created another tie, but DePetris converted a pass from Brennan to give the Pats the advantage with 3:49 left.
Sarah Geary (13 saves) stopped Beck in a 1-on-1 confrontation to keep Springfield in the game and made an interception before a Carroll turnover with 20 seconds to play set up the final goal.
"Kellie Mooney set up the play," Jeffers said. "She got the ball to Jackie. When (Eastman) was fouled (seven seconds left) she passed the ball to me and I was fouled.
"I remembered a shooting drill we had at practice and I just stood there telling myself I couldnt see any of their defenders. I just saw the goal and took my shot."
Brophy, who played as a freshman when Carroll won at Springfield but missed last years meeting of the teams because of knee surgery, just shook her head as she thought about what had happened.
"Im so frustrated," Brophy said. "Our theme is to forget regrets, but I cant forget this.
"We play teams like Radnor (win), Conestoga (loss) and Springfield (tie) to prove ourselves."
Next week, Carroll will get to prove how well it plays against Catholic League opponents when the Catholic playoffs begin. A week later, Springfield will begin play in the District One Class AA Tournament.
"I wish we were allowed to be in their playoffs," Brophy said.
