Last year, Annie Brophy, a 5-foot-1 junior, was sidelined by a torn knee ligament. In 2005, Mary Beth Brophy, a 5-3 senior, sat out with a torn knee ligament and broken kneecap, separate injuries suffered within a seven-week span.
In yesterday's nonleague game at Villa Maria, the Brophys combined for five goals as the Patriots, ranked No. 8 in the state by Laxpower.com, rolled to a 12-3 victory over the No. 21-ranked Hurricanes.
Mary Beth Brophy, a midfielder who earned all-American honors at the end of last season, scored a second-half hat trick. Last year, the Georgetown recruit produced 58 goals while helping Carroll win its sixth consecutive Catholic League championship.
"She can really do it all," Carroll coach Lorraine Beers said of the 18-year-old. "She's developed into a great player."
Annie Brophy, an up-and-coming midfielder, provided a pair of first-half goals and added two assists.
"She dominates ball controls and she's become one of the team leaders," Mary Beth Brophy said. "She's improved dramatically over the last two years."
The Brophys' older sister, Jess, starred in lacrosse at Carroll and now is a sophomore defender for James Madison. The three sisters from Berwyn joined forces on the school's soccer team in 2004.
Before going to Carroll, Mary Beth and Annie Brophy competed in soccer, field hockey, basketball, and track and field at St. Monica School in Berwyn. They play club lacrosse for the Phantastix. Summers are spent at the family's home in Avalon, N.J.
Mary Beth Brophy was one of 150 players to try out for the U.S. women's under-19 national lacrosse team in August at Maryland-Baltimore County. She made it to the final 40 of a roster that now stands at 24.
"It was really disappointing," she said. "I would have loved to have made it. But everything happens for a reason."
In yesterday's game, Gabby Capuzzi also notched a hat trick for the 7-0 Patriots. Ashlee O'Hara, Olivia Salata and Eileen Boneck each added a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Krystin Mackrides scored two goals to pace the Hurricanes (4-2).
