High schools: Capuzzi, Brophy make a difference for Carroll

Gabby Capuzzi and Annie Brophy scored three goals to help host Archbishop Carroll to an 11-8 nonleague girls lacrosse victory over defending Class AAA district champion Conestoga Wednesday afternoon. Mary Beth Brophy and Ashlee O’Hara had two goals apiece and Olivia Salata also scored for Carroll (4-0), which outscored Conestoga in the second half, 7-4. Patriots goalies Maura Gallagher and Meg Corliss each made three saves.

In other nonleague action:

West Chester East 19, Penncrest 3

Jen Bond, Marissa Restaino and Brittany Moore scored goals and Alex Menghetti stopped 10 shots for the host Lions (0-4).

In the Central League:

Lower Merion 15,

Marple Newtown 5

Michele Lockhart scored four goals and Jill Berman and Nora Stabert added three goals as the host Aces (5-1) won their league opener.

Megan Sarcinello had two goals for Marple Newtown.

Boys Lacrosse

Archbishop Carroll 12, Neumann-Goretti 0

Dan Zamojcian and Andrew Johnson scored three goals and Joe Lerario added two goals to help the host Patriots to the victory.

Kevin Gallagher had six saves to earn the shutout for Carroll (3-4, 3-1), which outscored the Saints in the second half, 10-0.

St. Joseph’s Prep 12, Cardinal O’Hara 1

Pat Daly scored in the first period and Andrew Neubauer had eight saves for the visiting Lions (4-2).

In a nonleague game:

Avon Grove 11,

Upper Darby 3

Kyle Gannon, Tommy Sharp and Kevin Fonio got the goals and Pat Slattery had 16 saves Upper Darby (3-3).

Softball

Ridley 12, Radnor 2

Carolyn Goebel hit a three-run homer and Bridget Ryan and Amanda McCrea both had a pair of RBIs for the host Green Raiders, who needed only five innings to earn a Central League victory.

Ali Gurko chipped in with two singles and a triple for Ridley (3-4). Ryan, who struck out six, was the winning pitcher.

Alex Brindle had a single and double and drove in Radnor’s runs in the top of the first inning.

In the Southern Chester County League:

Great Valley 15,

Delco Christian 0

Evelyn Trotter had Delaware County Christian School’s only hit.

In a nonleague contest:

Christian Academy 9, Friends’ Central 3

Leah Kiehl had two singles and a double and drove in two runs for the host Crusaders, who scored in every inning but the fourth.

Lauren Atkins added a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Kaitlin Wright chipped in with a single and double for TCA (1-1). Kelsey Coppola, who struck out nine, was the winning pitcher.

Golf

Archbishop Carroll 275, Cardinal Dougherty 299

Greg DiPietro had a round of 40 and Dan Nieves shot 42 as the Patriots won the Catholic League match played at St. Davids.

St. Joseph’s Prep 241, Monsignor Bonner 249

Steve Minnick shot 3-over 38, Dylan Quinn had a score of 39 and freshman Mike Hartsough and Matt Johnson turned in scores of 41, but the Friars dropped a league match at Philadelphia Country Club.

Boys Tennis

Strath Haven 7,

Marple Newtown 0

Dan Gross, Will Mellor and Ben Cheung won singles matches in straight sets for the host Panthers (4-2, 4-1), who swept the doubles matches, losing only seven games to earn a Central League decision.

In other Central League action:

Springfield 4, Penncrest 3

Matt Correnti, Jon Hellmer and Pete Weiss swept the singles matches as the Cougars (1-3, 1-2) picked up their first league win.

The Springfield team of Chris Serrano and Justin Simmons lost the first set at No. 2 doubles, won a tiebreaker in the second set and took the third set, 6-2.

Radnor 7, Upper Darby 0

Riley Baver, James Lee and Ryan Devine swept the singles matches for the visiting Red Raiders, losing only four games.

Radnor lost nine games in sweeping the doubles matches.

Conestoga 7, Ridley 0

The visiting Pioneers lost only eight games in sweeping the Green Raiders (2-2).

In the Catholic League:

Monsignor Bonner 45, Father Judge 39

Minh Nguyen and Bob Discher won singles matches as the Friars picked up their first league victory.

Bonner (1-1) also got a win from the doubles team of P.J. Legradi and Matt Coady.

Cardinal O’Hara 60, Archbishop Ryan 48

Brendan Quinn, Kris Panerello and Doug Grcezkowski won singles matches in straight sets for the host Lions (1-1).

In the Southern Chester County League:

Kennett 7, Garnet Valley 0

The doubles teams of Scott Matthews and Mike Rafailidis and Somers Price and Sean Gillooly took their matches to three sets for the Jaguars.

In a nonleague match:

Bensalem 5,

Academy Park 0

Randy Williams lost in a tiebreaker in the third set at No. 3 singles for the host Knights (0-6).
