RADNOR — Samantha Tajarian listened to the instructions she received from her coaches before undefeated Springfield’s lacrosse game at undefeated Archbishop Carroll Thursday afternoon.

“They wanted me getting draw controls and scoring goals,” said Tajarian, who finished with two goals and one assist.

Rebecca Hartrum noticed something late in the first half of the game.

“We saw the scoreboard and said we shouldn’t have been tied with that team,” said Hartrum, whose goal four seconds before halftime came 27 seconds after Tajarian had scored the put the Cougars ahead on their way to their 16th consecutive victory, a 13-8 nonleague decision that halted the Patriots’ undefeated streak at 16 games.

“Rebecca’s goal was huge,” said Springfield head coach Keith Broome. “We put them down at halftime and then we dominated draw controls in the second half. They scored a couple times then we’d win the draw and go right down and score. ”

Carroll coach Lorraine Beers, whose team has two Catholic League games to play next week before going in search of its seventh consecutive playoff championship, also talked about draw controls.

“How many did they win?” Beers said. “That really hurt us. And the game was physical and we’ve played too many games where the other team just didn’t come back at us the way they did.”

Hartrum scored three goals and Julianna Jeffers (four assists), Jackie Eastman (two assists), Madison Poplawski and Tajarian all had two goals for Springfield (16-0). Eastman set up Tajarian for the goal that broke a 4-4 tie late in the opening half and Jeffers assisted Hartrum on the goal four seconds before halftime.

“(Jeffers) had the ball up top and I just rolled the crease,” Hartrum said. “Someone just cut back for me and I got the ball and shot it in.”

She shot the ball low, as assistant coach Kathleen Geiger had been telling her players to do. Goalie Maura Gallagher, who made 11 saves in the opening half for Carroll, had been stopping all of the Cougars’ high shots.

Tajarian and her teammates on the Springfield attack worked hard when Carroll had the ball.

“They stressed to us that we had to play defense all the way back to the (restraining) line,” said Tajarian, who is not one of the players who follows opponents’ attack players into the scoring zone.

Cara Ripoli, Shannon Doyle, Ashley Bowers, Jacqueline Piotti and Kellie Mooney were among the Springfield defenders who made things easier for goalie Sarah Geary. Mooney took a charge from Carroll’s Annie Brophy in the second half.

“She held her ground and made a very big play for us,” Broome said.

Jeffers scored late in the second half to give Springfield an 11-11 tie with Carroll last spring. She got three of her assists and scored a goal in the final five minutes of the second half as Springfield put the game out of reach.

“They have a tough team and we have a good rivalry with them,” said Jeffers, who will play next year at Delaware. “We knew we’d have to play a good game to beat them.

“Rebecca’s playing well this year. Her shots have been well-placed. That goal today was big for us.”

Gabby Capuzzi scored two goals in each half and Mary Beth Brophy had two goals and two assists for Carroll (15-1-1).
